Title: Jane for Jane
Author:
wolfie74
Fandom: Rizzoli & Isles
Characters: Jane Rizzoli, Maura Isles
Rating: PG-13
Word Count : 557
Summary: Street smarts is what people said. Jane sometimes wondered if it was a polite term rich people used for block head.
Episode Outtake: She Works Hard For The Money
Jane Rizzoli never went to a big four year college; never really saw much need for it. Why spend all that money, or more importantly let her folks spend all that money, getting some flashy degree she was never going to use?
All her life Jane had wanted to be a cop. From the time she was watching Cagney and Lacy reruns on television to those late nights watch Law and Order in high school. The thrill of finding out who the bad guy was, not needed and catching them had always enchanted her. At one point Jane had so many detective novels on her overflowing book shelf that they wooden structure had collapsed, sending the paperbacks every where and putting dents in the hardcover Sherlock Holmes novels.
Her brother had intervened at that time and helped her to release many of them into the hands of the local library as a very large donation. Jane had taken more trips down to ‘visit’ them than she’d seen the guy she’d been dating at the time.
Frankie was one of the few people who knew just how much Jane read, well, devoured, books. Not the trivia stuff though. Not like Maura. Jane liked books that delved into the relationships of the characters. Psychology and Sociology were, need-less to say, Jane’s best subjects.
Most people didn’t know that though and only saw the plain East Side Jane Rizzoli: blue collar Italian family and all that went with it. When people were asked to describe Jane, the words “book smart” were never mentioned.
Street smart is what people said. Jane sometimes wondered if it was a polite term rich people used for blockhead. Or at least about those who weren't in the same societal circles as they were. When Jane thought of the “could have beens” and “maybes” in her life, the level of respect she could have earned by going to BCU was the only thing she even slightly regretted.
As she and Maura sat together nursing drinks in what had become their habitual after case bar stop Jane wondered what her friend saw in her. Certainly Maura showed her more respect and in some ways understanding than any of the other guys on the force did.
“You’re mumbling again,” Maura’s voice broke though Jane’s thoughts. She must have been lost in thought.
“Huh?” Not the brightest comeback, Jane had to admit.
“You’re not stupid. You’re very smart, and not just ‘street smart’. As a matter of fact, you have an incredible ability to put together facts in such strange ways that I would never dream of. It’s like magic, if such a thing existed.”
“I do?” Jane was a little surprised at Maura’s confession.
“Yes. I believe you would have done well with or with out college. You may have never even gone in to police work, which would have been a shame.”
Jane was floored. She considered Maura to be one of the smartest people she knew; and quite brutally honest as well.
The smaller woman reached across the table, taking both of Jane’s hands in her own.
“It doesn’t matter to me what any one else says you are, or are not. I like Jane for Jane, and that’s enough for me.”
Jane smiled. That was enough for her too.
